Access to safe water is crucial for human health, but do you know how this issue relates to climate change?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After focusing on SDG 5 (gender equality) in February, the United Nations are placing the emphasis on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/water-and-sanitation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this month. According to the UN, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 billion people lived without safely managed drinking water services in 2020. The pressure to solve this problem is real, especially because demand for water is rising due to population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from the agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Earth\u2019s water sources and reserves are threatened by climate change, but good water management can also play a role in mitigating it. In this article, we explore the relationship between SDG 6 and climate action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>SDG 6 &#8211; Clean water and sanitation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean water and sanitation is one of the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which form part of the global 2030 Agenda. The UN estimates that 829,000 people die every year from diseases directly attributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices, and this SDG aims to solve this problem.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of six specific targets, five of which are geared towards 2030:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final target was meant to be achieved by 2020, and involved protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16082 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-800x1067.jpg 800w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Goal-6-infographic_page-0001-2-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Water and the climate change threat<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since water is a basic human health need, we would need to solve management, scarcity and hygiene issues even if our climate was stable. But global warming is threatening to turn the world\u2019s water issues into a full-blown crisis. There are several ways that climate change is affecting water on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Changes in rain patterns<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warming temperatures are leading to more water evaporation, intensifying our planet\u2019s hydrological cycle. This means that rainfall is becoming less frequent, but much heavier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-70816-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists predict<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme precipitation will intensify with global warming over large parts of the globe \u201cas the concentration of atmospheric water vapor which supplies the water for precipitation increases in proportion to the saturation concentrations at a rate of about 6\u20137% per degree rise in temperature\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the weather is likely to alternate between extreme precipitation and long periods of drought. For example, this winter saw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/02\/21\/in-pictures-parts-of-europe-face-risk-of-drought-after-historically-low-winter-rainfall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record low rain and snowfall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across Europe. As a result, water availability will vary widely throughout the year, oscillating between abundance and scarcity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Water contamination<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When too much rain falls at one time, the soil and plants are unable to absorb it all. This leads to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/how-climate-change-impacts-water-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenomenon known as \u201crunoff\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereby excess water drains into nearby rivers, picking up waste and contaminants like fertilizer on the way. This contaminated water ends up in lakes, peatlands, seas and oceans, polluting the entire water supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Melting of ice caps<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another famous effect of climate change is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/pages\/why-are-glaciers-and-sea-ice-melting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melting of glaciers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ice caps and sea ice. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, about 10% of land area on Earth is covered with glacial ice (90% in Antarctica and 10% in Greenland). The melting of such a large quantity of ice is leading to a rise in sea levels and a slowdown of currents, on top of releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Desertification<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because climate change is leading to more evaporation and fewer rainfalls, it is partly responsible for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/srccl\/chapter\/chapter-3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desertification of soils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world. According to the Intercontinental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desertification has already reduced agricultural productivity and incomes and contributed to the loss of biodiversity in some dryland regions. It is also leading to the spread of invasive plants that results in ecosystem services losses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the ways to combat soil desertification is the implementation of regenerative practices in agriculture (a practice sometimes known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climatetrade.com\/azolla-projects-and-climatetrade-run-first-eu-aligned-carbon-farming-pilot-in-spain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon farming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Jari Par\u00e1 REDD+ Project, for instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/market.climatetrade.com\/projects?id=56\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produces food sustainably while reducing GHG emissions in the Brazilian Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Water management as a climate change solution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As seen above, climate change has a definite negative impact on our planet\u2019s water. This is why finding efficient water solutions that help us preserve the availability and quality of water for all is crucial for climate action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Access to safe water<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing people with water that is safe to drink is not only a basic health need \u2013 it also leads to a reduction in carbon emissions. That\u2019s because when water isn\u2019t clean, people are forced to boil it before drinking it, often using inefficient open fires that emit CO2. that\u2019s why initiatives like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/market.climatetrade.com\/projects?id=194\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sierra Leone Safe Water Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are so important: not only does it reduce the likelihood of water-borne illnesses in the local community, but it also leads to cleaner, less polluted air.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Waste water management<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because climate change increases the risk of water contamination, reducing water pollution becomes even more important. Some projects are using innovative methodology to treat or reuse wastewater coming out of factories, avoiding harmful runoff. For instance, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/market.climatetrade.com\/projects?id=91\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carotino Palm Oil Mill Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Malaysia has installed an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anaerobic loop system that covers the factory&#8217;s wastewater lagoons, capturing methane that is naturally released from wastewater and turning it into electricity. This electricity is then used to power the palm oil factory and is fed back into the national grid, creating sustainable, circular production.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cleaning water sources<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, since contamination is unavoidable, cleaning the world\u2019s waterways and oceans is indispensable. This project, for example, consists in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/market.climatetrade.com\/projects?id=95\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removing plastic from the Mediterranean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sea and transforming it into valuable products.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March is the month of SDG 6 &#8211; clean water and sanitation.
